Interview:

RITC: What inspired you to write this book?

Author: In an all-night dream, I saw the division of a future America, which I call the Federated Republic of America. I met my four main characters – Marcos, Rose, Harriet, and Jason – separated behind impregnable walls and who had never met someone from another ethnicity. I saw their longing for freedom and to know each other. When I woke up, I knew I had to tell their story as a warning to us today. If we continue to harbor hatred and division in our hearts, then actual walls will eventually divide us and destroy our nation.

RITC: What messages or themes do you hope readers take away from your book?

Author: While my subject matters tend to be heavy – either post-apocalyptic or dystopian – I weave courage and hope through these stories of survival. And while venturing outside your comfort zone to get to know someone who doesn’t look or think like you is difficult, it’s well worth the effort. I want young readers to take courage from my characters and form lives not bounded by walls of hatred or division, unlike their older counterparts today.

RITC: What other books have you written or what's your next writing project?

Author: The post-apocalyptic prequel to Divided, Upheaval, in January, 2024. Currently, I’m working on Divided Series Book 2, tentatively titled Caged, and the mid-series novella, yet to be named. My aim is to publish “side-quest” novellas in between each of the four Divided novels, so stay tuned.

RITC: What advice would you give to new writers?

Author: We writers hear so much bad advice, so my best advice now is to weigh advice. Sometimes it applies – for instance, “dump the first draft” was definitely advice I took. And sometimes it doesn’t – “write what you know” was colossaly poor advice for me, since I never write from my own perspective, a middle-aged white female author. How boring! But seriously, I’d encourage authors to not swallow advice from other authors, no matter how successful, without considering if it applies to their author life.

RITC: Who's your favorite writer and outside of your book, what other book would you recommend? and why?

Author: I have so many favorite authors and, honestly, they change

every month or so. Right now I’m devouring everything Kyla Stone, a post-

apocalyptic indie author with quite a few complete series out. Her most recent

completed series, The Light We Lost, combines a murder mystery, serial killer, and

gang violence into the apocalypse. Its gripping, terrifying, and inspiring all at the same time. Of course, I love the dystopian classical writers – Kurt Vonnegut, Octavia Butler, George Orwell, Alduous Huxley, and Lois Lowry, among too many others to name. Strangely enough, one of my favorite books of all time is War and Peace.

RITC: Is there a resource that you'd like to share or recommend for upcoming writers or book reviewers?

Author: The Book Funnel app is a must-have for voracious readers and new indie authors. It’s free for readers, and there are different plans for authors so look into that. But I’ve had great success connecting with readers and have discovered new authors as a reader myself. Also, readers can join my Advance Reader Team on Book Sirens, Net Galley, or via my social media accounts. I love working with bookworms and want to support your (ahem, non-lethal) book addiction!
